Pattern Inventory Adventures: Part Two

In which we catalogue and pack all of the 1970s patterns in my collection (plus some errant 50s/60s ones that somehow escaped my notice in the first part).

Simplicity 3124 (1950)

Simplicity 3047 (1960)

Butterick 2151 (1961)

The 1970s is often not taken seriously in terms of fashion eras. it’s a bit too close maybe, and in popular culture we tend to focus on the extremes of the decade. It was’t all disco wear and hippies!

There are actually quite a few design influences from the 1930s and 40s in 70s garments. A-line skirts and draped evening gowns. Pagoda sleeved blouses and slinky loungewear. Of course the difference is in the details. Lots of new synthetic fabrics were being produced in the 60s and 70s. All the rage at the time, many of those polyester knits are now considered ugly and uncomfortable. I’m hoping to make up some of these patterns in nicer materials especially for spring and summer wear.

Here are some highlights for you. Hopefully some of which you will be seeing as finished garments soon!

Simplicity 7665 (1976)

Style 2769 (1979)

Style 4828 (1970s)

Butterick 3157 (1970s)

Simplicty 7625 (1976)

Simplicity 6094 (1973)

McCall’s 5113 (1976)

1970s simplicity pattern with red and green markings indicating 2 different sizes – an unusual occurrence with patterns vintage or modern.

This pattern piece was extended using dual colour tissue paper.

‘A Dictionary of Sewing Terms’ is included in these 1970s instructions sheets.

Must get on to some actual sewing, tidying and that sort of thing now. See you soon!
