1970s Maxi Skirt: McCall’s 5113

As part of my ongoing use my stash goals, I’ve made up view D of McCall’s 5113 from 1976.

Details:

~ Made from a vintage curtain panel (thrifted).

~ Used modified view F pockets to match the zig-zag pattern of the fabric. The small shank buttons are mostly decorative. They are secured through the pocket and flap layers, tacking them together.

~ Cut as sized, but ended up taking in 2″ overall at side seams.

~ Due to fabric limitations, I added a small panel onto the bottom corner of the back piece to complete the shape.

~ Used button on the waistband instead of the skirt hook suggested for a more casual look and more secure fastening. A contrast zipper that picks up the light turquoise in the material.

Overall, a fairly quick and easy project. I’d still like to try view F in a more structured fabric. Now that I know what pattern alterations I need to make, it should be even quicker!

Update: Here’s a mirror self shot of me wearing the skirt with a t-knit top (self made). I removed the waistband partially and took in the centre front a little to make it fit better, and sit at my natural waist for a more flattering look.

Self portrait in smudged mirror. McCall’s 5113.
