Spring is in the air?

As many across North America are asking that same question – due to a sudden cold snap in March, I am thinking about my summer wardrobe. It’s something I routinely neglet to think about until the season has arrived and I’d rather be out riding my bike than chained to the sewing table.

McCall’s 5437 (1960) – these look so spring like! Classy but not too formal.

As much as I am tempted by the glorious fabrics available at my usual haunts, thrift and an overflowing stash have given me enough guilt to hold back. I need to take another look at the cotton bins and come up with some fun and light wearables for after the snow melts.

Vogue V8812 (1940) – maybe this with a shortened skirt for bike riding…

Of course I’ll probably go for some cute skirts. Skirts are something I’ve made a lot of. They usually are pretty quick to make and require far less fitting than a top or dress. As lamented before, the tricky bits of sewing for oneself are always the little adjustments to make things fit you properly.

McCall’s 8640 (1951) – I like the 1940s quality of the skirt and the pockets. Might try the skirt on it’s own.

As I have a shorter waist than “average” (being a silly term used in patterns/fashion), I often have to alter full length garments to suit me. It’s a challenge that I am attempting to work on though. Sometimes the hardest part is forcing yourself to do something in the first place.

The Sweetheart Sundress from Gertie’s New Book for Better Sewing – I’d like to try more of Gertie’s patterns.

The Shirtwaist Dress from Gertie’s New Book for Better Sewing – I like the shirtwaist style but it does require more fabric…

Simplicity 7019 (1967) – the tops and skirts might be good quick basics.

So, the goal in the next few months:

  • Some sort of light jacket or blazer suitable for ‘going out’ that can be worn with a nice dress.
  • Summer frocks – especially some I can ride a bike in (perhaps I should finally try out my convertible pencil skirt idea…)./
  • Blouses and tops – various fun and fancy.
  • Easy wearing skirts – various.

Wish me luck!

Love Heather
